The Right Reverend George Kotei Neequaye, Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Tema, has called on Christians to use the celebration of Christmas as a time for reconciliation, peace with God, and love for one another.

Delivering his Christmas Day message at the SS Alban and Matthew Cathedral, the Bishop explained that the word Christmas means “the feast of Christ,” a time set aside not only for joy and celebration but, more importantly, for honouring Christ through peace, forgiveness, and righteous living.

Reflecting on the angel’s proclamation in Luke 2:10, Bishop Neequaye said Christmas brings “great joy” to the world, expressed through worship, carol services, family gatherings and acts of kindness. He stressed, however, that the deepest joy of Christmas is found in accepting Jesus Christ as Saviour and living a transformed life.

The Bishop identified peace with God and God’s love for humanity as the two central themes of Christmas. Citing Romans 5:1–2, he said Christ is the bridge between God and humanity, restoring the broken relationship caused by sin and calling believers to walk in holiness.

In a strong appeal for peace, Bishop Neequaye urged prayers for an end to conflicts in Ghana, including the Bawku and Kokomba–Nanumba disputes, as well as peace between political parties. He also called for peace in global conflict zones such as Gaza, Ukraine, Sudan, Haiti and other troubled regions.

On the theme of love, the Bishop described Christmas as God making Himself visible through Jesus Christ, demonstrating sacrificial love for the world. He reminded Christians that seeing Christ is seeing the Father, and that God’s love demands a response of love toward neighbours.

The Bishop further challenged Christians to live out the message of Christmas by caring for the poor, rejecting corruption, protecting the environment, and fighting illegal mining (galamsey), which he said is destroying Ghana’s natural resources.

He concluded by encouraging believers to bless others in tangible ways this Christmas, so that lives may be drawn to Christ, and prayed for peace, joy and abundant blessings in the coming year.
