St. George’s Garrison Anglican Church, located in Burma Camp, was the first Military Anglican Church within the Diocese of Accra. Typically, military churches cater for the spiritual needs of military personnel, civilian staff, and their families. As time passed, Rev. Canon Maj. Ebenezer N.A. Laryea and the church leadership recognized the necessity of establishing a second Anglican Church in Michel Camp, Tema, to meet the spiritual needs of Anglican military personnel, civilian staff, and their families. Having a church in Michel camp will also benefit Anglicans residing in and around Michel Camp.
Thankfully, Col. Samuel Agyekum Yamoah of blessed memory, a valued member of St. Georges Garrison Anglican Church and the Commanding Officer of 1 Infantry Battalion (1BN) at the time, generously provided a hall near the parade square at the Battalion Headquarters for use as a place of worship. On October 10, 2004, a new church was established, and an inaugural service was held on December 12, 2004. The church was named Garrison Anglican Church of Advent by Most Rev. Dr. Justice Ofei Akrofi, who was the Bishop of Accra at the time.
Rev. Canon Maj. Ebenezer N.A. Laryea, the Senior Anglican Chaplain in charge of St. George’s Garrison Anglican Church in Burma Camp at the time, celebrated the first Mass to mark the beginning of the new church. Forty-three individuals attended the service. Occasionally, some members from St. Georges, including the late Col. Agyekum Yamoah,
Joined the new congregation for worship. Their presence provided encouragement and support to the fledgling church.
Over time, the church’s membership increased to the point that the existing place of worship could no longer accommodate the growing congregation. In response, the church requested for a land to construct a new church building. The military high command through the Battalion Headquarters granted this request, and a sod-cutting ceremony took place on December 11, 2005, marking the beginning of the new church building project. By August 2, 2015, the church was relocated to its current place of worship when the construction reached the roofing stage. The project has been supported mainly by individual contributions.
Previous Chaplains of the church include Rev. Fr. Emmanuel H. Quartey, Rev. Fr. Frank Anyagre, Rev. Canon Thomas Annan-Forson, and Rev. Dr. Lt. Col. Francis Obodai Lokko. The church’s current Chaplain in Charge is Rev. Canon Maj. Richmond Clottey.
